David, I like that you're working loosely. However, try to think of how lines would work between all these segments. You're wrestling too much with proportion and the under drawing. I don't mind that you're laying in ellipses but capturing the contours is important. These have no hands, feet, hair or sense of gender. If you're going to use primitives to block out a drawing in motion, it will always seem too static. Try to see these forms and block them out lightly - then move on to getting the contours defined.
